The University of Technology Nuremberg (UTN) is participating in the newly established ELLIS Unit Franconia, which has now officially become part of the European AI network ELLIS (European Laboratory for Learning and Intelligent Systems). The unit will strengthen research and collaboration in the field of artificial intelligence in the metropolitan region and beyond.
ELLIS is a pan-European network of excellence in artificial intelligence and machine learning research. Its goal is to strengthen Europe’s long-term international competitiveness in AI research by connecting leading researchers and establishing shared research structures. ELLIS Units serve as local centers of scientific excellence where researchers from different disciplines collaborate and develop long-term research agendas.
Several researchers from UTN are involved in the new Unit Franconia. Prof. Dr. Wolfram Burgard, Founding Chair of the Department of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at UTN, is one of the Directors of the unit. In addition, Prof. Dr. Claire Vernade, Prof. Dr. Yuki Asano, Prof. Dr. Josif Grabocka, and Dr. Tanja Kaiser are contributing to the unit.
Alongside UTN, the participating institutions include Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU), the University of Würzburg, the University of Bamberg, and the University of Bayreuth.
The unit focuses on key future-oriented topics in AI research, including:
- Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning
- Robotics and Robot Learning
- Computer Vision and Multimodal Learning
- Natural Language Processing and Language Technologies
- Foundation Models
- Medical AI
- Ethical, transparent, fair, human-centric, and sustainable AI
The goal of ELLIS Unit Franconia is to advance cutting-edge research in Learning and Intelligent Systems, support early-career researchers through joint study programs, doctoral training, and summer schools, and develop AI applications that address socially relevant challenges. A particular focus is placed on ethical, transparent, and sustainable AI.
In addition to Franconia, new ELLIS Units have also been established or expanded in Grenoble, North Rhine-Westphalia, Slovenia, Sweden, Czechia, and Denmark. ELLIS Unit Franconia further strengthens the existing AI ecosystem in Bavaria and promotes collaboration among universities across the Franconian region.
