The next step for the continued temporary use of the former Kaufhof building has been taken. Mayor Marcus König and Daniela Bender, deputy head of the Middle Franconian regional office of Immobilien Freistaat Bayern, signed the corresponding lease agreement for the retail space at the corner of Pfannenschmiedsgasse / An der Mauthalle in the Kaufhof building in the presence of Dr. Andrea Heilmaier, City Councilor for Economic Affairs and Science, and Prof. Dr. Michael Huth, founding president of the Technical University of Nuremberg.

Starting in summer 2025, the University of Technology Nuremberg (UTN) is opening a public exhibition space called the “UTN Science Lounge” on the ground floor of the building. This will give UTN a central spot in the city center of Nuremberg to encourage conversation between science and the public, and make the university feel like a real part of everyday life. The aim is to give interested citizens an insight into the structure of the university and the areas of research, teaching, and transfer through interactive information offerings. The UTN Science Lounge is not only a window into the world of science, but also a place of exchange that makes the topics of science and education visible in the heart of the city.

Mayor Marcus König: “I am delighted that the Technical University of Nuremberg is moving into the Kaufhof building as another temporary tenant. This deliberately puts science and education at the heart of our city. This not only strengthens the connection between our newly founded university and the urban community, but also contributes to further developing the city center as a vibrant place of knowledge, exchange, and innovation.”

Dr. Andrea Heilmaier, Economic and Scientific Officer for the City of Nuremberg: “The UTN Science Lounge is much more than a temporary use—it is a strong signal of how a difficult location in the heart of Nuremberg can be transformed into a place of the future. The University of Technology Nuremberg is one of the most important developments for Nuremberg as a center of science and innovation: here, a flagship project for science, innovation, and education is being made visible and will soon be accessible to everyone.

Prof. Dr. Michael Huth, founding president of the University of Technology Nuremberg (UTN): ” UTN has taken root in Nuremberg and sees its close connection to the region as a central element of its identity as an urban, socially integrated, and interdisciplinary university. In the new UTN Science Lounge, we actively seek dialogue with the people of Nuremberg. We invite them to get to know UTN better, discover our research, and follow how our scientific impulses are impacting urban society.”

Daniela Bender, deputy head of the Middle Franconian regional office of Immobilien Freistaat Bayern (IMBY): “I am delighted that Immobilien Freistaat Bayern is able to support UTN in its development with this lease. With the new use of the former Kaufhof building, we are making a sustainable contribution to the continued use of the building. In addition, this project further intensifies the good and trusting cooperation with the city of Nuremberg.”
