The University of Technology Nuremberg (UTN) has successfully completed an alternative accreditation procedure. With this decision, the German Accreditation Council confirms that UTN’s approach to building its quality management system is both innovative and effective.

UTN is among a small number of universities in Germany to have chosen this alternative accreditation route and is the first university ever to be accredited in this way. Rather than focusing primarily on individual degree programs, the accreditation evaluates the university’s overall approach to quality management in teaching and learning. The Accreditation Council confirms that this approach is equivalent to traditional program or system accreditation and ensures compliance with academic and formal quality standards.

At the same time, UTN is now authorized to independently accredit its future and newly developed degree programs within this framework. This also entails increased responsibility for the continuous quality assurance and further development of its academic offerings. “We have now established a reliable foundation for our degree programs. For us, accreditation marks the starting point for the continued development of quality in teaching and learning. This is particularly important for us as a young university in view of our expected rapid growth,” says Professor Isa Jahnke, Founding Vice President for Education and International Affairs at UTN.

The procedure is designed as a multi-stage process and includes, among other elements, mechanisms to improve degree programs during their development phase, to review existing programs comparatively with a focus on interdisciplinarity, and to enhance quality through mutual learning. Evaluations are carried out by a group of independent experts who also assess UTN’s quality management system as a whole. The successful accreditation is the result of a multi-year development process involving numerous internal and external stakeholders, including university leadership and quality management. It provides the foundation for the further expansion of our academic portfolio and the university’s next stages of development.

Currently, UTN offers the master’s programs Artificial Intelligence & Robotics and Human and Artificial Intelligence. The first bachelor’s program in Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence is expected to launch in the winter semester 2027/28.
