University of Technology Nuremberg Presents Plans for First Building

Sustainable, Urban and Embedded: The University of Technology has published plans for the first campus building. The object is characterized by its sustainable design, a flexible concept and swift contract award procedures.

NÜRNBERG. “It would be fair to say that the multi-use building is the nucleus of our campus”, according to Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Hans Jürgen Prömel, Founding President of the University of Technology Nuremberg. “It stands for the interdisciplinary approach of the university. The whole building features a diverse range of possible uses: Not only will it house the first Department structures, but also parts of the administration.”

Recycled Concrete and Green Facades

The multi-use building will be six floors high and have a timber construction. The building’s core will be made from recycled concrete. Based on its design, the building will have a very low energy consumption, thereby meeting passive house standards. The photovoltaic plant on the roof will produce a part of the required energy. Two facades will feature a trellis to provide for large-scale greening. In summer, this natural sun-protection will increase the quality of living and working inside the building. Evaporative cooling by the plants will act as a sort of biological air conditioning for the surroundings and adjoining buildings.

Start of Construction Still this Year

The contract award to a general contractor contributes to streamlined order processing and better cost control. The general contractor is not only responsible for turnkey construction of the building, but also for the complete building planning – from the first design to construction. Start of construction of the first building is scheduled for August 2022. The plan is for it to be finalized and in use by the end of 2023.

Flexible Use of Buildings

The first building on the campus of the University of Technology Nuremberg shall predominantly be used by the Founding Executive Board and the Department Chairs with their executive staff. Parts of the administration and some central functions will also be located here. With an area of approximately 2,500 square meters, the building will house up to 120 persons. In addition to working space, the building will have enough space for first seminar rooms. Instead of standard confined offices, so-called open space areas have been planned for better team spirit and communication. Furthermore, these areas are flexible in use and can be adapted to changing requirements. Some rooms are dedicated to concentrated working or team working projects.

Focus on Sustainability

During the planning phase of all buildings on the campus, special emphasis was put on sustainability. The target is to build a campus which is mostly self-sufficient on the basis of renewable energies. In terms of construction material, the focus is on the use of ecological materials such as timber elements. Also, the buildings have been designed to maximize flexibility regarding future use. Care will be taken to fulfill nature and species protection requirements and to preserve valuable green structures during planning and construction.

The University of Technology Nuremberg was founded on January 1, 2021 and has been the first new foundation of a state-run university in Bavaria since 1978.  With its consistently interdisciplinary approach, an innovative spectrum of subjects, new teaching methods and a future-oriented organizational structure, a model university will be created when it comes to teaching and research.
